Oct. 9, 1918 — Henry Backus, 28, who had been in the service of his country since last July, dies in a Pittsburgh hospital. He was the first to die of the musicians who went from LaPorte to render service.

Oct. 9, 1968 — North Vietnamese soldiers swarm out of the jungle near Thuong Duc before dawn and try to overrun 300 U.S. Marines pushing toward a threatened American Green Beret camp.

Oct. 9, 1993 — LaPorte High School senior Katie Ellison is crowned homecoming queen. She was nominated by the French Club and is the daughter of Chuck and Karen Ellison.

Oct. 9, 2008 — Ben Rees Park continues to be a magnet for violence among local youth, including occasional gunfire.
