National politics were center stage in LaPorte County Monday night, Oct. 8, 2018, during the first of two debates between the three Indiana candidates vying for a seat in the United States Senate. At the debate held at the Dworkin Center at Purdue Northwest in Westville, Indiana’s current U.S. Senator, Joe Donnelly, a Democrat from Granger, squared off with the Republican nominee, Mike Braun of Jasper, and 3rd Party candidate, Libertarian Lucy Bretton.

The event was moderated by former WTHR anchor Anne Ryder and televised live on PBS. Indiana’s Debate Commission sponsored the event along with Purdue Northwest.

Ryder opened the night with a question regarding this past weekend’s Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh. Many of the questions came from Indiana’s voters and several were posed by members in the large audience.

One very heartfelt moment involved the mother of a 4-year-old child who had been killed by the accidental discharge of a firearm at a babysitter’s home. The mother posed a question to the candidates regarding their position on a law mandating that firearms be secured.

Much of the debate was a see-saw of biting remarks directed at each other, mostly between Donnelly and Braun. Braun accusing Donnelly of being a career politician, while Donnelly made the case for Braun being too extreme on many issues.

Other questions ranged from Second Amendment issues to the candidates’ position on pro-life.

The next and final debate will be held Oct. 30 in Indianapolis.

Having had Donnelly lie directly to my face about how he would not vote for a specific bill and then within the following week, vote to support the bill he pledged not to support-ruined any support he would ever get from me. Mr. Braun I don’t really have an opinion one way or the other. Ms. Bretton due to the lack of political support for the Libertarian ticket can only serve as a spoiler. I promised Senator Donnelly 5 yrs ago that if he lied to me I would never support him again. that holds true today.

The civilized members of society are finished with the Demonrat’s lies and calls for violence. They are nothing but spoiled infants in the bodies of adults. Voting for them is voting for the end of the United States.
