LaPorte teen dies in pickup truck accident

A LaPorte teen died when his pickup truck left the road, went up an embankment, then rolled several times, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office.

William Hammerschmidt, 18, was driving on South Taylor Road in the Fish Lake area when his white Chevrolet pickup went off the road for unknown reasons, police said. Police found the badly damaged truck on its roof in the middle of the road.

Firefighters extricated Hammerschmidt. He was declared dead at the scene.

Police said evidence showed the truck was traveling north on Taylor Road, failed to make a left turn, and went off the road. The truck went up a steep embankment, rolled onto it passenger side, and continued to roll over until it came to rest on the roof in the road.

Besides county officers, emergency responders included LaPorte County EMS, several fire department personnel, and the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office.

This is so sad. Prayers for the family. What a tragic loss, so young.
