The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatality crash that occurred on U.S. 6 west of Walkerton Thursday afternoon, May 25, 2017.

Deputies responded with Hamlet firefighters and LaPorte County EMS to U.S. 6 at 875 E at approximately 12:15 p.m. and found that a 2004 Dodge pickup truck and a semi tractor-trailer had collided on U.S. 6. The driver of the pickup truck was pinned in the vehicle and as firefighters were working to extricate him, he passed away. The driver of the semi tractor-trailer was not injured.

Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Walker, who investigated the crash, reports that the 2004 Dodge truck, driven by Michael Megyeri, 63, of South Bend, was traveling west on U.S. 6, crossed the center line and struck the eastbound tractor-trailer. The semi driver attempted to avoid the oncoming vehicle and ended up driving off the roadway and through a wire fence. The semi was heavily damaged, but the trailer remained intact and none of the contents leaked. The trailer contained a concrete-hardening compound that is not toxic or hazardous.

The LaPorte County Coroner’s Office is assisting to help investigators learn if Megyeri may have had a medical issue. A routine part of the investigation will include toxicology screening of the victim. The semi-truck driver did pass a certified breath test.

Besides LaPorte County sheriff’s deputies and EMS, Hamlet firefighters and the coroner’s office, Walkerton Police and LaPorte County HAZMAT also responded.
