South Central Elementary School honored military veterans Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, with a special ceremony.

Mrs. Malecki’s pre-K class, along with kindergartners, sang “Veterans Day.” Mrs. Cheryl Gardner, retired South Central teacher after 40 years and back to fill in for a teacher on maternity leave, sang the National Anthem. LaPorte County resident Ed Smith, a 1965 graduate of South Central, delivered the keynote address.

Fourth grader Autumn McKinner, fifth grader Savannah Swanson and sixth grader Evia Vandercar won the essay writing contests for their grade levels and shared their essays with the audience.

Union Mills Legion members presented the colors at the beginning of the ceremony and gave a flag-folding demonstration with Junior Council students.

Several military veterans from the community attended and were honored with a robust standing ovation.
