The wet snow didn’t cool off the warm feelings of more than 500 people who packed the Silver Palace Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, to rally for LaPortean Melody Jackson. “Miracle for Mel” was held to raise funds

Melody Jackson

for Melody, her husband Karl, and their family as she suddenly finds herself fighting liver cancer in an advanced stage. Many know Mel as the lady with the sunny smile at KarMel coffee shop in LaPorte, now closed for the time being.

At the Feb. 17 fundraiser, community members gathered to enjoy a meal provided by Silver Palace and Indiana Deli, take their chances on donated items, and buy baked goods.

Mel could not attend because of the risk of contracting a virus. She offered this heartfelt message on her Facebook page: “I would sincerely like to thank my good friends for hosting the pasta dinner … I know this was a lot of work for you, and it sure wasn’t easy to do, while working and having families of your own! Thank you so much … . And to everyone else who came out, wow, what a night! I was able to see pictures and live videos of the night. I’m so impressed by all of your love and generosity! You have all touched my heart! … Thanks to everyone who made me a homemade card, I smiled through all of them! Also, thanks to the ones who brought me gifts to the pasta dinner! I felt so loved! Every one of you is a blessing in my life; you may not feel like you’re doing enough, but you are! I’ve noticed! My daily cards at home keep coming, my prayers and good thoughts daily that you send me on my phone! We are all family in my eyes! Hugs to everyone! Love, Mel”

it was just amazing how so many wonderful people in our community pulled together for this and special thanks to Dan & Julie Reed, Jessica Arnold, the Silver Palace, Indiana Deli, all those that donated gift certificates and items for the raffle, baked goods, volunteered to help with setup, clean up and work during the benefit… and so many others for making it all possible! It was a wonderful night, delicious food, and such a joy to see so many supporters and such comradery. We live in an awesome community and are blessed to have such generous, compassionate, loving people.
