Chesterton man turns himself in 2 months after February OWI crash and death

A Chesterton man has been charged with Operating a Vehicle Causing a Death in connection to the February 2018 crash that killed a patient who was being transported in an ambulance.

Jeffrey Bilyak, 47, faces the Felony 4 charge as well as additional charges of Reckless Homicide (Level 5 Felony) and two counts of Operating A Vehicle While Intoxicated Resulting In Serious Bodily Injury (each count a Level 6 Felony). He surrendered at the LaPorte County Jail on April 11, 2018, and was being held on a cash-only bond of $20,205.

Bilyak had a blood alcohol level of .17 percent when he tried to pass a semi in his pickup and collided head-on with the ambulance Feb. 15 just north of LaCrosse in foggy conditions. The patient in the ambulance, Heather A. Wilding, 47, died as a result of the crash. The ambulance driver and attendand were injured, as was Bilyak.
