Center Township Board candidate Wellinski offers pre-election thoughts

Letter from Center Township Board candidate Bob Wellinski

For the past 35-plus years, I’ve covered the political campaigning and, my favorite, the excitement of election night through my camera lens. I have witnessed firsthand what Jim McKay’s intro to “ABC’s Wide World of Sports” referred to as “the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat.” This year’s election will have a different perspective for me. This is the year I decided to pursue one of my lifelong goals – to run for public office. I’m one of six Republican candidates who filed for the 2018 primary election for Center Township Board.

There are so many great organizations and opportunities to volunteer in our community that showcase our residents’ talents and dedications. I feel it’s time to serve you in a new capacity by sharing your ideas and concerns to the Center Township trustee and board. I want to take an active role in serving the needs of our community. Through the years, I have been blessed to serve LaPorte and, while doing so, to listen to people’s ideas and feelings. I feel it is my calling to play an even more active role in our community. While the federal, state and county offices are a vital and prominent part of our government, I feel the Center Township trustee and board are the heart of the community. This is where, I feel, local lives are touched.

Our current trustee – Lisa Pierzakowski – and the current board members – Amy Burris, Eric Haverstock, and Scott Ford — have done an outstanding job caring for the needy of our community and supporting our topnotch volunteer fire department. I would like to continue their mission in serving those in need and supporting the volunteers who risk their lives for our community.

LaPorte has been home my whole life. I am a graduate of LaPorte High School and, at age 14, began my career as a photojournalist. I have worked for 35 years with the LaPorte Herald-Argus and currently freelance for, The Beacher, and The Northwest Indiana Catholic. I am currently in Gary Diocese Lay Ecclesial Ministry program with aspirations of becoming a deacon. I have served as a firefighter/EMT with Center Township Volunteer Fire Department, where I also held the position of secretary and treasurer. I have also served as president and vice president of the Hailmann Elementary School PTA and was recently elected vice president of the Queen of All Saints PTO. I am an active member of the LaPorte Catholic Church. My wife and I have been married 17 years with six children: Alan, Matthew, Julia, Michael, John Paul, and Rebecca.

I want to thank The League of Women Voters of LaPorte County, which hosted a recent candidates’ night at Purdue Northwest where I was honored to sit with my fellow candidates. After hearing what Amy Burris, Paul Vincent, and Donna Weist said – regardless of who wins – they are quality candidates, each bringing a unique talent.

Whether or not I am elected, I cannot stress enough the importance of getting out and voting. I sincerely thank all of you who vote for me or even consider me for Center Township Board. You are who makes this community a great place to live and are the reason I am raising my family here.

Robert “Bob” Wellinski
