May 17, 1918 — The Germans are setting traps outside their trenches, consisting of wires connected with bombs of a new type that explode when soldiers on patrol stumble into the wires.

May 17, 1968 — Forty thousand Communist-led workers strike and seize the huge state-owned Renault automobile factory in the Paris suburbs.

May 17, 1993 — Chester Beemer, who as executive director helped to turn around the financial direction of the LaPorte County Swanson Center, announces his resignation to take a similar position in Tennessee.

May 17, 2008 — The Michigan City girls tennis team earns its eighth consecutive sectional title by beating Marquette.
