Coolspring Township Firefighters withstood temperatures in the 90s to battle a barn fire late Sunday morning, June 17, 2018, in the 9300 West block of CR 200 N.

The fire was reported by the homeowner shortly after 11 a.m. The building, a 24×24-foot barn, was engulfed in flames when the first firefighters arrived. A motor home and an enclosed trailer located on either side of the barn also caught fire and were destroyed. The building and all of the contents were a total loss.

The homeowner told Coolspring Fire Chief Mick Pawlik that he had just finished mowing and put the riding lawn mower in the barn. While in his home he heard a loud “pop” and discovered that the barn was on fire.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control and keep it from spreading to a nearby tree line. Their efforts were made more difficult because the barn was quite a distance from the road, plus they had to endure the high heat and humidity in their very heavy, insulated gear. Firefighters took frequent breaks and hydrated with water and Gatorade while battling the fire.
