Donald Machler, 1929-2018

Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, is handling the arrangements for Donald M. Machler, 89, of LaPorte, who passed away Saturday, June 16, 2018, at LaPorte Hospital.

Donald was born in Evanston, IL, on May 21, 1929, to Lawrence and Pauline (Bruck) Machler.

Donald was married on December 17, 1951, to Alice Jane (McLeod), who preceded him in death. He then was married on July 30, 1983, to Nancy (Jeglic), who also preceded him in death.

Surviving are his beloved children, Karen A. Towle of LaPorte, Linda S. Machler of LaPorte, Charles A. Machler of Orlando, FL; stepdaughters, Nancy Jeglic of Maywood, N.J., and Julie (David Gugelev) Jeglic of Hackensack, N.J.; sisters, Sylvia Thompson of LaPorte and Lillian Norton of Mill Creek; 7 grandchildren, Jennifer (Chuck) Morris, Linden (Jennifer) Lantz, Linissa (Michael) Wirtes, Delaina (Brad) Kinnison, and Ryan, Eric and Josh Towle; and 8 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Jessica and Sammie Morris, Joseph and Lois Lantz, Keegan and McKenzie Wirtes, and Logan Towle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nancy Machler; twin brother, Ronald Machler; and 4 brothers, George, Robert, Douglas and Phil Machler.

Donald  served honorably in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1951-1953. He was owner of Supreme Plumbing and Heating. He also did building maintenance for LaPorte County. Donald built the first solar home in LaPorte County. He enjoyed woodcarving, antique cars, and spending time with his grandchildren and family. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and eating at his favorite restaurants.

A time of visitation will be held from noon to 3 p.m. (CT), with full military honors at 3 p.m., on Saturday, June 23, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte. Burial will take place privately with the family at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the LaPorte City Band, 396 Melrose St., LaPorte, IN 46350.

    So sorry about Don. My husband Jim lived next door to him back in 1957 on Hwy,. 35 as we were going together before we got married. They were very nice to us. We got married in 1962 & still use to see him a lot. So sorry for his loss. Prayers for his family.

    I just seen the cross at 450E. &350 N. today. I saw the accident after it occored & I had to turn around and go another way to get to town. I didn’t know that was him in that accident until today when I seen his name on the cross & flowers. We live on 300 N. Sorry it happened so close to our house.
