UPDATE: 2 boys die after being pulled from Lake Michigan Aug. 18

Update Aug. 19 from DNR:

Indiana Conservation Officers received information that the 14-year-old male victim of the incident yesterday evening passed away early this morning at Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago. At approximately 5:40 p.m. yesterday evening, officers and first responders were notified of a person missing in the water. The victim was found unresponsive and was brought back to shore. The victim was transported in critical condition to Porter Regional Hospital, and then to Comer Children’s Hospital Chicago by helicopter, where he later passed away. Both incidents are still under investigation and there is no further information available. The identifying information of the victims from either of yesterday’s incidents will not be released. 

Aug. 18 information from DNR:

A 10-year-old Chicago boy is dead and a 14-year-old Chicago boy was reported in critical condition after they were pulled from the waters of Lake Michigan off the shore of Indiana Dunes State Park, Chesterton, Aug. 18, 2018.

The younger boy was found face down in the water about 40 yards from shore at about 4:45 p.m., the Indiana DNR stated in a press release. He was brought to shore and CPR was immediately started. He was transported to Porter Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. 
About an hour later, the 14-year-old was pulled from the water about 50 yards from shore in the same area. Two on-duty Porter police officers entered the water and pulled him to shore. CPR was initiated by an on-duty Chesterton police officer prior to the boy being transported to Porter Regional Hospital, from which he was later airlifted to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago in critical condition.

The names of both victims were being withheld as of Saturday night, Aug. 18.

At the time of both incidents, the Indiana Dunes State Park  had water restrictions in place that cautioned beachgoers to go no farther than waist-deep water. Rip currents were strong.

Agencies assisting were Porter EMS, Porter Fire, Porter Police, Chesterton Police, Chesterton Fire, Burns Harbor Police, and Indiana Dunes State Park Staff.
