UPDATE: Man charged with murder, another with obstruction of justice, in shooting death of Michigan City man

Less than 24 hours after the shooting, Michigan City Police have charged two men in the homicide investigation in the 200 block of E. 6th St. that occurred at about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 4, 2018.

The victim, Nathanial Havis, 60, of Michigan City, was shot and killed hours before his 61st birthday and was pronounced dead at the scene by the LaPorte County coroner.  

In custody are:

Nathan Cureton, 22, of Michigan City, charged with Felony Murder/Aiding, Inducing, or Causing; and Attempted Robbery Level 3 Felony/Aiding, Inducing, or Causing. Cureton was being held in LaPorte County Jail on a $1 million cash bond.

Tyler Abbott, 21, of Trail Creek, charged with Obstruction of Justice, a Level 6 Felony, also being held in LaPorte County Jail on a $2,000 cash bond.

Chief Mark Swistek applauded the efforts of the entire Investigative Division, the LaPorte County HIDTA Drug Task Force, and the shift officers involved who worked overnight on the case. He also thanked the Michigan City Fire Department, LaPorte County EMS, the coroner’s office and the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Division for their assistance.
