Civil War aficionado speaks at November 2018 Genealogical Society meeting

William Adams

The LaPorte County Genealogical Society met Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018, at the LaPorte Park Department office building at 250 Pine Lake Ave. Twenty-one members and guests attended.

After the business meeting, William Adams of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) outlined the roots of his organization. The men and boys who returned home after serving in the Union Army naturally supported each other, and soon formed the Grand Army of the Republic. As these men aged, the SUVCW took up their causes. Bill told the history of the posts in LaPorte County and the area, and the SUVCW’s present-day activities.

More information about the society is available at http://sites.rootsweb.com/~inlcigs/. The society also has a blog at http://lpcgs.blogspot.com . There you can find summaries of meetings and news items about the society.

The next meeting will be Dec. 11, which will include the annual Christmas meeting and presentation of the Genealogist of the Year. The meeting will be held at Round the Clock Restaurant at 6 p.m. Contact Dorothy Palmer at 219-872-8726 or djpalmer611@comcast.net by Dec. 1 if you plan to attend.
