Snow, slick roads, winds make for a messy Monday

The Winter Weather Advisory in effect from Sunday night through Monday afternoon proved to be pretty accurate. Roaring winds, icy rain and snow hit mainly overnight, prompting the county to issue a Travel Advisory that extended into midday Monday. Area elementary and high school kids got an extra day’s vacation.

Downed trees and branches caused problems and power outages. As of 2 p.m. Monday, about 2,550 NIPSCO customers were without power in LaPorte County — down from nearly 4,000 earlier in the day. The toll road westbound lanes in LaPorte were closed for a time Monday morning because of an overturned semi; police reported no injuries.

LaPorte County got about 2-3 inches of snow, but the gusty north wind made things more interesting. Wind gusts hit as high as 43 mph overnight here, the NWS reported Monday morning.

“Light” lake effect snow showers are predicted for Tuesday and Wednesday.
