For the 24th year, the Healthcare Foundation of LaPorte brought thousands of folks together Saturday night, Dec. 8, 2018, for an incredible evening of music and singing at the Holiday at the Pops concert. The event, hosted at LaPorte’s stately Civic Auditorium, has become a holiday tradition in the community featuring a wealth of talent.

Among the highlights this year: Children from the Singing Company of LaPorte County accompanied Mayor Mark Krentz and his wife, Laura. Local singing group Cripple Creek charmed the audience. And Donna Mitchell sang a beautiful solo of “O Holy Night.” As always, the evening’s centerpiece was the LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra, led by Charles Steck, which performed Christmas-themed pieces by Tchaikovsky and Bach.

This year a song, “Fantasia on Greensleeves” was dedicated to longtime foundation board member, Dr. Hester Muller. And Mayor Krentz presented a proclamation to Healthcare Foundation CEO Maria Fruth, which honored the organization’s dedication to the community.

On a personal note; I have been fortunate to attend the Pops concert for the past several years and find that it is difficult to capture the magic of this evening in words or photos. For those who attended Saturday’s event, you were blessed to see and participate in this wonderful LaPorte tradition. It is gratifying to see the great talent that exists in so many of our friends, from the sweet voices of the children to the harmonic blends of Cripple Creek. It is terrific that nearly every seat in the Civic was filled; I don’t think even Bob Hope did that when he visited in the late 1970s! 2019 will mark a quarter century of Christmas entertainment and I’m confident we can expect the best show ever. This is entertainment at its finest and is guaranteed to make even Bob Cratchit leave the Civic floating a foot off of the ground, dash home, put up Christmas decorations, and head out Christmas shopping the next morning!
