Driver in Dec. 25 fatal crash is identified

The driver of a car that hit a tree on Christmas night in Michigan City has been identified as Melvin Adams, 65, of Michigan City.

At about 10 p.m. Dec. 25, MCPD officers responded to the crash scene and determined that Adams, driving a black 2015 Mercedes Benz, was traveling south on Grace Street from Walker Street. The car crossed the South Shore Railroad tracks before leaving the road and hitting a tree at the intersection of Grace and Holliday streets.

Adams was transported to Franciscan Health Michigan City by LaPorte County EMS, where he later died. There were no other occupants in the car.

Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.
