Jan. 3, 1919 — Three LaPorte boys arrived at Fort Harrison from overseas. One has influenza; one has shell shock, influenza, pneumonia and rheumatism; and one has a wounded left knee.

Jan. 3, 1969 — Sen. Edward M. Kennedy is victorious in his bid to supplant Sen. Russell B. Long as Senate Democratic whip.

Jan. 3, 1994 — Jennifer and Robert Bauer’s baby, Haley, is the first baby of the year born at LaPorte Hospital. She arrived on Jan. 3.

Jan. 3, 2009 — A fire at Harmony House on Michigan Avenue is “definitely not intentional.” There was no visible damage on the outside of the building.
