Jan. 5, 1919 — The House Appropriation Committee discusses feeding starving Europe outside of Germany. It agrees to furnish food stuffs to her allies after June 30.

Jan. 5, 1969 — The county commissioners elect new member Richard O. Knoll president and hold over member William Fischbacher as vice president. Douglas G. Wakeman is also a new member.

Jan. 5, 1994 — State Sen. Anita Bowser’s bill would allocate 65 cents of every $3 in riverboat admission tax to Medicaid. But she admits the bill has “no chance” of getting a hearing.

Jan. 5, 2009 — A streak of vandalism downtown makes for extra cleanup for the LaPorte Street Department. There was damage to three stop signs, two electrical boxes for Christmas tree lights, and more.
