UPDATE JAN. 17: A 16-year-old, Javan D. Brown, has been charged with murder in the shooting death of Justin Ameer Garner, 18, on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019. Garner was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head in the driver’s seat of a vehicle in front of 214 Jackson St. at about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Michigan City Police said several witnesses identified Brown as a suspect. After a Jan. 17 probable-cause hearing, Brown was charged as an adult with Count I Felony Murder. Brown was being held in LaPorte County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond.

As reported in WNLP and other media just weeks ago, Javan’s brother, Dareon Brown, 18, was shot and killed in Michigan City Dec. 18, 2018. Lamar Qualls, 16, was charged with his murder. Obituary information confirmed that Dareon and Javan were brothers. From Michigan City Police Jan. 16:

“On Jan. 16, 2019, at approximately 7:59 p.m., Michigan City Police received a call of a deceased person inside a vehicle in the 200 block of Jackson Street. Upon arrival an adult male was located in a parked vehicle with a single gunshot wound to his head.

“Members of the Michigan City Police Department Patrol Division, Investigative Division, and the LaPorte County HIDTA Drug Task Force, are investigating. No information on the deceased is being released at this point pending notification of family. As this is an ongoing investigation, more information will be released as the case unfolds. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to please contact lead Detective Cpl. Michelle Widelski at 874-3221 Ext. 1088.”

    Good news. More thugs off the street there in “Little Chicago”. I can’t help but think that MC with eventually be like that movie Escape From New York.
    I remember it being a real dump back in the 60’s over by where the casino is now, and it really hasn’t changed much. Nobody seems to care or want to better themselves over there. A real shame.

    Take a look around LaPorte and you won’t see much improvement either. We have our fair share of drug dealers and murderers as well.
    At least MC is trying. The down town is starting to show new life and their big box stores draw a lot of people from LaPorte. Let’s see… so far in LaPorte we have a Starbucks. No Kohls, Lowes, Menards, Hobby Lobby (the list goes on). Oh! and by the way, you can drive on their streets without destroying your suspension. What happened to the “wheel tax” that was supposed to fix our streets?

      they would rather pave street most people dont use and leave streets that just about everyone drives on, boyd b. 18 th street. crazy
