Jan. 19, 1919 — A LaPorte woman receives word that her son was killed in a motorcycle accident on the eve of his departure for home on December 31 after surviving eight long months of war.

Jan. 19, 1969 — Pat Nixon shares her husband’s finest hour by holding the two family Bibles on which he is sworn in as the 37th president of the United States.

Jan. 19, 1994 — Local Sports Editor Dave Krider accepts a position with USA Today, and Sports Correspondent Blaine Gamble has also covered his last game for the paper.

Jan. 19, 2009 — There are two views in LaPorte of Barack Obama’s impending presidency: those who think he’s going to spur economic growth and those who don’t think he’ll have any impact on their lives.
