UPDATE: ID released of man who died in Jan. 22 house fire

Information from LaPorte Fire and Police

Melvin Peek, 58, died in a house fire in the 600 block of 4th St., LaPorte, on Tuesday morning, Jan. 22, 2019. The fire occurred at about 5 a.m. Authorities released his name Jan. 23. 

“Upon arrival officers observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the home,” a police press release reported. “Officers attempted to make entry to make sure there was no one inside but due to heavy smoke and flames they were unable to make entry.”

From LaPorte Fire: “First arriving crews stretched a hose and attacked the seat of the fire. Nearly simultaneously, they found the elderly male unresponsive inside the house. The man was determined to be deceased. The fire was knocked down at 5:45 a.m. and an investigation initiated. LaPorte Fire Investigators are being assisted by LaPorte Police Department detectives, a State Fire Marshal agent and an ATF agent.”

The cause has not yet been determined.
