Ela Bilderback has filed to run for the Republican nomination for LaPorte City Council, 3rd Ward, in the May 7 primary election. Bilderback, 49, is the Department Manager of Sporting Goods at the LaPorte Walmart. She currently serves as President of the City of LaPorte’s Historic Preservation Commission and is a board member of the LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra.

“After taking the time to attend virtually every city council meeting for the last 3 years, I feel I have a valuable understanding of the way the system works,” Bilderback said in a press release. “I have a number of ideas on what I think the city needs, and I am ready to get involved. I am purposeful, determined, and independent. And I like to get things done. In my job, I deal with the public every day and enjoy helping people. It would be similarly rewarding for me to serve 3rd Ward residents on the council.”

Bilderback emigrated to the U.S. from Poland in 1990 when she was 21, and became a U.S. citizen in 2011. “As a young woman, I had an adventurous spirit, and I wasn’t afraid to embark on such a daring undertaking; I left my home country in search of economic opportunity. In a way, I became the embodiment of the American dream. I enjoy my job and love my house, a historic bungalow on Indiana Avenue. I was a full-time caregiver for many years; it is only in the last few years that I have had the time and opportunity to get involved in the community. I am excited and grateful for this new chapter in my life.”

Bilderback, who was a delegate to the Republican State Convention in Evansville in 2018, is also a member of People Engaged in Preservation. Her home was on the 2016 Candlelight Tour.

Bilderback has two grown children and said she wants this to be a better town for them. “I want LaPorte to grow. And I’d like to see an increase in neighborhood pride,” she said. “I’d also like to see our street paving program revamped. The current choice of streets we are repaving often makes no sense to me. I’d like to be a part of the discussion in setting up a more logical pavement management plan.”
