Calling all middle school players: Hit the lacrosse field

Lacrosse is quickly growing in popularity with more high schools and colleges, developing teams each year. Entering its 18th year, the LaPorte Lacrosse Club is currently recruiting and taking registrations for its middle school teams.

LaPorte Lacrosse Club is a non-profit organization that coordinates teams at both the high school and middle school levels. The LaPorte Lacrosse Middle School Program is divided into two levels: 5th/6th grades and 7th/8th grades. LaPorte Middle School Lacrosse is part of the Indiana Boys Lacrosse Association run by the True Lacrosse organization. LaPorte teams are open to both boys and girls.

Practices are now under way at Hailmann Elementary and will take 2-3 times a week from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Games take place starting April through the end of May on Sundays. Games will be played locally as well as at locations in Porter, St. Joseph and Elkhart counties. Each team is scheduled for at least 7 games.

This is a learning league designed to help students develop a love for the sport and beginning skills.

“Lacrosse is a sport that is continuing to grow in popularity and in competition throughout the country,” said Middle School Teams Coach Francis Kovalcin. “My sons have played lacrosse for LaPorte for several years. We are fortunate to have a long-standing program here in LaPorte County where our players can learn the fundamentals of the sport and begin to compete on a dedicated level.”

Registration costs are $125 per player, which helps pay for referee expenses, league fees and player jerseys and practice clothing. In addition, families are asked to help with fundraisers twice per season to help offset league costs not covered by registrations.

In addition, players will need the following equipment items (LaPorte Lacrosse can help find gently-used gear):

  • black helmet – (typically a Cascade helmet)
  • mouthguard (must attach to the helmet)
  • gloves
  • elbow pads
  • should pads
  • lacrosse stick
  • protective cup for boys
  • black shorts for middle school players
  • cleats – soccer or football (plastic spikes – no metal)
