Larry Pinkerton is a candidate for LaPorte’s 5th Ward City Council seat. He will be a candidate in the May 7 Republican primary.

Pinkerton, 72, of 1612 L St., was born and raised in LaPorte, graduated from LaPorte High School in 1966, and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara, the next year. The Pinkertons have been married for 51 years. They have two daughters and three grandchildren. Pinkerton attends Zion Tabernacle of this city, where he has been both a board member and church elder since January of 2000.

Pinkerton stated, “Having served on the city’s Police Merit Commission for 12 years, and currently serving on the Mayor’s Veterans Committee for eight years, I am committed to serving the city I love and have called home from the very beginning. For the last year or more, I have been attending city council meetings, and even county meetings, and have gained much knowledge and awareness. After considerable prayer and reflection, I realize that now is the time for me to get more deeply involved. I want to help the city in any way I can. I want to help the people live better, see what their problems are, improve how we do business, fix the things that need fixing, and make a difference,” Pinkerton said.

Pinkerton retired from NIPSCO in October 2003 with 34 years of service, including 10 years in the union constructing lines and 24 years in supervision. He said, “My managerial responsibilities with NIPSCO included being in charge of warehouse operations, which provided me broad experience, as the position involved interfacing with the departments of budgeting, accounting, purchasing, planning and engineering. The inventory control function of my department was key, as we were responsible for making sure that the electric line department and the gas street department had everything they needed to do their jobs. My last position, prior to my retirement, was as a field supervisor in the electric line department for the LaPorte District.”

Pinkerton explained his family’s proud tradition of military service in the United States Navy. “I served my country for 22 years in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Naval Reserves, and retired in July 1997.  I served in Vietnam on the USS Kittyhawk CVA-63 in the Gulf of Tonkin from November 1970 through July 1971. My father served in World War II on the USS Lexington CV-2. His ship was sunk at the Battle of the Coral Sea. After two harrowing days in the water, he was rescued.  Between my father and his 4 sons, we have 95 years of U.S. Navy service amongst us.”

Pinkerton also held a commission in the Military Department of the State of Indiana for 7 years. He served as a major in the Indiana Guard Reserve as 3rd Battalion Commander, First Brigade, headquarters company. He is currently a member of Vietnam Vets of LaPorte, American Legion Post 83, VFW Post 1130, and the Amvets.

Pinkerton reflected, “In the military, I learned discipline, how to manage people, how to work with them, and the importance of respect and honor.  I was a command career counselor over 46 men, guiding them in the benefits of military service. I trained people, problem solved and brainstormed with them, worked on heavy machinery, inspired and motivated people to get the job done, delegated, depended on others, and constantly fostered teamwork. I have also seen the world … Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines. It has given me a broader perspective, but it has also made me realize how good we have it here in America, and in LaPorte.”

Pinkerton concluded, “I would consider it a tremendous honor to serve the City of LaPorte as councilman of the 5th Ward, and seek this office as just one more way of giving back. The job of city councilman should be about the people: listening to them and taking care of them.  It’s their city, after all. If elected, I will dedicate myself to the city, and what is best for the people.”
