Suzanne L. Miller is a candidate for LaPorte’s First Ward City Council seat. She will be a candidate in the May 7 Republican primary.

“I am totally committed to serve the city I love and have called home for 40 years,“ Miller said. “I have attended city council meetings to gain knowledge of the workings of city government. I have lived in the same residence in the heart of the First Ward for over 25 years. My husband and I took an abandoned building in great disrepair, and made it into our home. The property had been either a school or a church since 1923, and never paid the city a nickel of taxes until we owned it. We have met many of our neighbors while working and restoring the property, and we are familiar with and understand the problems of the First Ward neighborhood and its residents.”

Miller attended Purdue University, where she met her husband. She raised all her three children here in LaPorte, where they all graduated from the local LaPorte schools, including Purdue and Tri-State universities. All her children are married and still reside and work in northern Indiana.

Suzanne has worked for NIPSCO in two locations, as a bookkeeper for several firms and lawyers, and at the LaPorte Airport as the fixed base operator while managing the employees there. She is now retired and still serves in many financial capacities as a volunteer, including serving on the supervisory committee of Generations Credit Union, as treasurer of Pioneerland at the fairgrounds, and treasurer of the Michigan City Aviators.  You may have seen her at Pioneerland as the one-room schoolmarm during school tours, working in the blacksmith shop, or baking pies for fundraisers. She is an accomplished cross-stitcher with many blue ribbons to her credit. She has coached adult and youth sports and Scouting activities.

Miller’s husband, Merle, served in the Army in Vietnam. Unusual for the time, she followed him there, living in Vietnam for 8 months and serving the U.S. government in an unofficial intelligence capacity. Miller has also visited Thailand (within a few feet of the Crown Prince), Cambodia, Iran, France, England, Russia, and Germany. She has written a book about her experiences. She has supported veterans, homeless people, schools, churches, and senior centers. She has volunteered as LaPorte’s official “Mrs. C.” during the holidays for many years, and has performed on stage and at historic festivals to entertain and teach people that those who do not learn from the mistakes of history are doomed to repeat them in the future.

“I respectfully ask for the support of my fellow neighbors and citizens of the First Ward. If  elected, I promise to put the first ward FIRST,” Miller said.
