Barbara Landis, 1932-2019

Barbara Jane Landis, 86, of New Carlisle, IN, passed away peacefully at 11:55 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2019, at Hamilton Grove in New Carlisle.

On Nov. 18, 1932, in Hastings, MN, she was born at home to Charles and Doris (Soderquist) Burden.

Barbara was a school bus driver with the LaPorte School Corporation for 23 years and retired from there. She was an avid reader and writer and wrote several children’s stories that focused on the beauty of Stone Lake and the animal life that surrounded that lake.

Our mother was our strongest advocate. She was fierce when it came to her family! She possessed an intense thirst for knowledge and wanted to share it with her family and friends. Her love of community was deeply ingrained in her. A more selfless person does not exist. She was a bright light in our lives and would move mountains for us if she could.

Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, Maxwell H. Landis.

Surviving are one son, Jeffrey Maxwell (Theresa) Landis of Sharps Chapel, TN; three daughters, Jeni E. (Walt) Mumma Pearson of LaPorte, IN, Tamara A. (Thomas Spevak) Landis of Bloomington, IN, and Stace Anna (Chris) Kelly of Alpharetta, GA; one sister, Carol Jean Gardner of Phoenix, AZ; one brother, John Frederick Burden of New Carlisle, IN; seven grandchildren, Gregg Mumma, Bradley (Rosie) Mumma, Laura (Chris) Dilley, Alexi Turbow, Mark (Brandi) Mumma, Ali Otto, and Kaitlyn Landis; and great-grandchildren, Ava Dilley, Logan Dilley, Madelyn Mumma, Bradley Mumma Jr., Ellie Rose Mumma, Jace Pickford, and Max Mumma.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. EST/noon CST Saturday, March 30, at Hamilton Grove, New Carlisle. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Dear Barbara’s Family, What a beautiful and elegant person your Mother was. It has been awhile since I have seen or spoken to her but she was always gracious and she had a soft loving manner of speaking. The Burden family has lost another beautiful soul. I am sure that your Mother and my Mother are having tea and chatting about old times. Ron and I offer you our sincere sympathy.

She was such a classy lady. Loved her husband and family so much. At 86 she was still beautiful. I know she is happy to be with Max. Sorry for your loss, but she is sooo happy and at peace now.
