Chester Schlegel, 1934-2019

Chester Schlegel, 85, of Michigan City, IN, passed away peacefully at 9:28 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2019, at LaPorte Hospital, LaPorte, IN.

On Feb. 25, 1934, in Anderson, IN, he was born to Morton and Georgia (Benefiel) Schlegel.

Chester worked as a mechanic and was active as an Elder at Michigan City Christian Church. He enjoyed traveling, doing yard work with heavy equipment, and fixing just about everything, especially with friends. Above all, Chester loved spending time with his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.

On July 18, 1970, at First Christian Church, Michigan City, he married his wife of 42 years, Judith A. (Johnson) Schlegel, who preceded him in death on Jan. 31, 2013.

Also preceding him in death were his parents and several siblings.

Surviving are his two daughters, Margie (William) Fizer of Michigan City and Kathy (Thomas) Magill of LaPorte; three brothers, Joe Schlegel, John (Barbara) Schlegel and Dan (Michele) Schlegel; three sisters, Lois Purdue, Wilma (John) Causey and Anna May Wiley; six grandchildren, Tia, Luke, Resa, Jenna, Tucker, and Audrey; one great-grandchild, Jayden; and his dog, Mandy.

The immediate family of Chester would like to invite close family and friends to Chester’s home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 14, to share in food, fond memories and socialization.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, with Pastor Kim Cole officiating. Visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at the funeral home.
