Concrete on Stone: Whitecaps be damned, some gutsy collegians test their vessels

Collegiate competitors in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Great Lakes Student Conference’s Concrete Boat Races arrived at Stone Lake with their team-constructed vessels on Friday, April 11, 2019, ready to roll. But wouldn’t you know it — wind gusts were so strong they even created whitecaps on our little lake and canceled official competitions. Still, a few courageous teams tested their vessels anyway.

Whether they hit the waves or not, the roster of colleges was impressive and our community can be proud they graced our shores: Valparaiso, Northwestern, Bradley, Marquette, and many more.

Two daring teams, Marquette University and University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, decided to test their boats despite the weather. A member of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign team said the team’s spirits were somewhat dampened by the weather. But judging from the energy displayed by the hundreds in attendance, it appeared a good time was had by all.
