Floating wetland to be installed at Kiwanis-Teledyne Park

Information from LaPorte Park and Recreation Department

As part of our efforts to improve the function and appeal of the Kiwanis-Teledyne Park inlet (on the shore of Pine Lake off Pine Lake Avenue), we are installing a floating wetland, which is essentially a man-made raft that floats on the water’s surface and houses native wetland plants.

These floating wetlands have plant, soil and root interactions similar to a natural wetland and provide homes to beneficial water-cleaning microorganisms.

The floating wetland, as well as areas around the inlet, will be planted with native plants by the LaPorte High School Natural Resources team on May 15. The project is coordinated through the LaPorte County Soil and Water Conservation District with Clean Water Indiana and NIPSCO Environmental Action grants.
