May 16, 1919 — Corsets and all the mysterious things women wear under their outer dress are luxuries and taxed in the new government luxury tax.

May 16, 1969 – An unmanned Soviet spacecraft completes its voyage to Venus, releasing a small capsule that parachutes to the surface of Earth’s nearest neighbor.

May 16, 1994 — In government lingo, the LaPorte City Council’s latest proposal reads, “Ordinance for the sanitary control of outside pets.” In layman’s terms, that means dog walkers had better carry pooper-scoopers.

May 16, 2009 — General Motors notifies 1,100 of its dealers that they will be fired late next year.
