By unanimous vote on May 28, 2019, the Michigan City School Board hired former LaPorte Slicer Coach Tom Wells to be skipper of the Wolves basketball program. Wells, who was present at the board meeting with his wife, Laura, was introduced by Assistant Superintendent Wendel McCollum.
Wells, who has amassed 332 wins as a head coach during his 30 year career, spent 15 years at LaPorte. Despite a 19 and 7 season during the 2016-2017 season at LaPorte, with little sound reasoning, Wells’ contract was not renewed by LaPorte. Wells opted to take some time away from coaching, however stayed active in the game by officiating in the region. When the head coaching job opened at City, he took a long, hard look, spent time discussing with his family, sought the advice of friends and applied for the job.
Wells shared with WNLP: “I’m very excited for this opportunity and I am also humbled by the tradition that comes with basketball at Michigan City. Pride in the program is very evident here with a passion that may be the best in the state.”
The coach has already jumped into action and has a busy calendar planned with workouts, tournament and league play scheduled for June and July; he has already met with many players and likes what he sees. Without question, this unique turn of events can only mean an amped-up level of excitement for basketball in the Duneland Athletic Conference this coming season.

This is a big win for Michigan City and a huge loss for La Porte. I’m sorry to see Tom leave but happy for him too!

Congrats Coach Wells!! We are so happy for you to have a new challenge and City is so lucky to have you to guide and Coach them on and off the court. You will be missed by the students at LPHS, as many look to you and your leadership. Good luck to you at City! Cannot wait to see how you develop the program and team.

Based on the preferred style of play I have witnessed from Coach Wells’ teams over the years, this could be a match made in heaven. Give him some shooters and others willing to run up and down the floor and look out! Good luck .LP’s loss could be MC’s gain.
