Dates set for Roland Hockett exhibit at museum: June 8-Oct. 5

The LaPorte County Historical Society Museum will be hosting an art exhibition of works by former LaPorte resident Roland Lee Hockett. Born in LaPorte and a 1956 graduate of LaPorte High School, Hockett spent the majority of his career as an art professor at Gulf Coast College in Panama City, Florida. Hockett earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University and then taught at LaPorte High School for three years before moving to Florida.

Hockett has graciously donated a number of items from his collection to the museum, and the majority will be on display in this exhibit.  He has produced numerous paintings, sketches and sculptures throughout his lifetime. His “Liberty” mural was originally installed at Costa Rica’s Juan Santa Maria International Airport. Other works have been installed in the Florida Supreme Court, Panama City Florida International Airport and the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica, among others. Hockett’s sculpture “New Liberty III” was accepted for installation in Spain’s Canary Islands; however, the Sept. 11 attacks resulted in the sculpture being placed in Florida. Many more works have been placed with patrons, public institutions, and businesses throughout Florida, Costa Rica, Germany, and the United States.

Hockett has won numerous awards and honors, and continues to produce artwork including copper sculptures, as well as engaging in experimentation in combining acrylic, carvings and copper.
