U2 joins Underwood: WLOI and its new FM Rock 106.5 add classic jams

La Porte has a new 24-hour Rock station at 106.5 FM.

ROCK 106.5 signed on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, and includes the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show in the mornings. ROCK 106.5 FM went on at 1 p.m. with the 1981 hit ‘’Start Me Up’’ by the Rolling Stones.

The nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show, produced out of Indianapolis since the early ’80s, will run on the new ROCK 106.5 every Monday through Saturday from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The new FM station is simulcast on WLOI at 1540 AM, on the air since 1958.

‘’Alternative rock from the ’90s to the Doors and Led Zeppelin and your classics that you normally have.  You’ll also hear a little Metallica on here as well,” said Matt Moore, co-owner of Spoon River Media, LLC.

Sister station 96.7 The Eagle, established in 1964, continues with its familiar country music format and ‘’Morning Mayhem’’ show hosted live by general manager of the radio stations Dennis Siddall and Jo Eberhart.

Moore said the addition of ROCK 106.5 stems from the Federal Communications Commission allowing AM stations to broadcast on FM frequencies due to changes in the industry.

Spoon River Media, which purchased the LaPorte-based radio stations in August 2018, conducted extensive research that pointed to a music format based on classic rock as the clear need in the area, Moore said.

‘’There was no other clear format that anybody in the area really wanted outside of classic rock, but they didn’t want just classic rock.  They wanted classic rock that also played a little bit of ’90s and 2000s. We’re delivering,’’ Moore said.

ROCK 106.5 will also feature local news starting at six minutes before the top of each hour during the Bob & Tom Show.

Local news will continue airing on WCOE, also known as 96.7 The Eagle, at the top of each hour from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.

I may be old (69) but ya gotta admit we had the greatest bands and so I say……If you think you are too old to rock ‘n roll, then you are. Kudos and good luck. Gonna go out and add to my car radio this morning!

I have been listening since it was launched…Hardly a bad song has been played, and that was just personal preference. Great song selections, and variety (Nirvana followed by the Stones!!! Awesome). Keep it coming!

Hey there you guys rock! Long time listener first-time caller. I really enjoy your radio station except I think you play too much Rush. Although I think Rush sucks swamp water. So one Rush is way too many for me. Keep rocking. I will hang up and listen for your reply.

Great music, it is about time, BUT get rid of the 2 morning guys. They do not belong on air in LaPorte. I will go back to WEFM in the mornings until those 2r time slot is over.
