4 departments battle smoky barn fire for hours

Firefighters from four area departments battle of large barn fire Saturday afternoon, Aug. 10, 2019, near Rolling Prairie. The call came in at about 4:30 p.m. and upon arrival firefighters found a large pole barn engulfed in flames.

Kankakee Township firefighters called for assistance from New Carlisle, Center and Springfield with an estimated 50,000 gallons of water used to extinguish the blaze. To make sure that the entire fire was extinguished an excavator was brought in to pull apart the barn’s remnants so firefighters could extinguish all hot spots.

The barn, at a residential property in the 5300 N block of CR 300 E, was a total loss. The cause is so far unknown.

The fire attracted a lot of attention with a large plume of smoke that could be seen from as far away as western LaPorte County.

In addition to the four fire departments, LaPorte County EMS responded to the call along with LaPorte County Sheriff’s deputies, who closed off the road in the area of the fire.
