Aug. 21, 1919 — Herbert Hoover, head of the food relief commission, declares that America is the shining deliverer to which famine-ridden Poland, Austria, Hungary and “Czecho Slovakia” are looking.

Aug. 21, 1969 — The remains of Hurricane Camille dumps 10 inches of rain into the historic James River and it roars over the banks in the Virginia mountains, killing at least nine persons.

Aug. 21, 1994 — Comedian Pat Paulsen challenges Mayor Elmo Gonzalez at a fundraiser for Gonzalez’s state auditor campaign at the Civic Auditorium. Paulsen says his grandmother was Belle Gunness.

Aug. 21, 2009 — Julie & Julia, The Orphan, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, and Aliens in the Attic are showing at the LaPorte Cinema at 608 Colfax.
