LaPorte County Commission President Dr. Vidya Kora is pictured at a White House conference on Aug. 20, 2019, held for county commissioners from a four-state region including Indiana. Kora is seen here raising concerns with White House officials about ransomware attacks on local government entities such as the one that LaPorte County sustained in early July, when hostile foreign actors using the RYUK virus to hold county government computers hostage. Kora made the case that federal and state officials need to devote far more resources to prevention, detection and prosecution of ransomware attackers, saying such attacks have become “epidemic” across the country and deserve a unified, robust response from state and federal government.
