Oct. 23, 1919 — Dr. J.M. Siegel has installed a new X-ray machine especially designed for work pertaining to the teeth and jaws in the Savings Bank Building, Rooms 304-5-6.

Oct. 23, 1969 — The addition to the South Central Elementary School building will be named “Fair-Sanders Addition” after two sixth grade teachers who have taught a total of 53 years in the system.

Oct. 23, 1994 — Oprah Winfrey completes her first marathon and beats her target time. She says she’s not giving up her day job and will stick with half-marathons from here on out.

Oct. 23, 2009 — The number of auto thefts in La Porte has been decreasing each year. There were 95 in 2006, 70 in 2007 and 58 last year. Nationwide trends show a 20-year low in auto thefts.
