Man arrested, drugs and gun seized in morning raid on Brighton Street

La Porte City Police, along with the La Porte County Drug Task Force, arrested a La Porte man on drug and gun charges on Nov. 8, 2019, during a 5 a.m. raid on a Brighton Street house.

The person arrested was a 35 year-old La Porte man, who was taken into custody on drug and weapons charges. He is expected to face two counts of Dealing in Cocaine or Narcotic Drug, Level 2 Felony; Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, Level 4 Felony; and Possession of Methamphetamine, Level 6 Felony.

Police have not yet identified the man.

Entering the house with a search warrant, officers found an illegally possessed firearm, illegal drugs, drug packaging materials and paraphernalia. The seized firearm had been reported stolen in a separate theft investigation in rural La Porte County.

“The firearm seized during the raid this morning (Nov. 8) was within reach of the suspect upon ERT members entering the home. The tactics utilized by the LaPorte County ERT while quickly securing the suspect, led to no officers or citizens being injured,” according to a press release.

“This raid followed prior arrests of eight individuals in the months leading up to today’s efforts. Over the past several months, LCDTF detectives completed numerous controlled purchases of Crystal Methamphetamine in La Porte (City). Those months-long efforts led to the recent arrests of eight individuals on charges of Dealing in Methamphetamine. These eight individuals have been charged in LaPorte Circuit Court and their cases remain pending.”

This morning’s raid was a joint effort involving the LaPorte County Drug Task Force, The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearm and Explosives (ATF), the LaPorte County ERT (Emergency Response Team), and Shift 3 Officers from the LaPorte Police Department.

The La Porte County Drug Task Force asks anyone with information about criminal activity, including gun violence, to contact them at 219-873-1488, or via social media.

Oh, to be sure, Jeff. There is a huge drug problem in this town and arresting one guy won’t even put a dent in it. This is unfortunate but true.

There is a huge drug problem everywhere guys, not just LaPorte. So what do you do, sit back and let this disease run wild, or try to do something about it.
I would choose the latter, and am greatful for the drug task force and their hard work.
