Driver apparently flees after car-flattening accident; passenger airlifted

La Porte County Sheriff’s Office press release:

On Dec. 21, 2019, at approximately 3:47 a.m., deputies were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash in the 3900 north block of CR 100 West in rural Center Township. Deputies Andrew Hahn and Austin Wells arrived and located a silver vehicle severely damaged along the east side of the roadway. An injured man was found lying on the ground with an upper body injury near the passenger side. A thorough search of the area for the driver commenced but yielded negative results.

The injured man was treated at the scene by emergency personnel and then airlifted to a regional hospital for treatment, where he remains.

Deputies from the LCSO Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT) assisted. Evidence at the scene indicated the vehicle was traveling north on CR 100 West. For an unknown reason, the vehicle left the east side of the roadway and struck two trees.

The injured man has been identified as Jemale C. Nichols, 39, of Michigan City.
