Five local health care professionals have been honored by LaPorte Hospital and Starke Hospital, following the hospitals’ announcement of their “Colleagues of the Quarter” and the winner of the Daisy Award for Nursing for the fourth quarter of 2019.

La Porte Hospital’s Non-clinical Colleague of the Quarter is Sean Bolton, Computer Technician.  “Sean is known for his knowledge base, kindness and outstanding communication skills. Many colleagues throughout the organization rely on his expertise. His day is interrupted continually with phone calls, questions and requests; he patiently takes the time to explain his work plan while troubleshooting until each issue is resolved.  His customer service and great attitude have not gone unnoticed,” hospital officials said.

The La Porte Hospital Daisy Award recipient for extraordinary nursing is Sammy Marquez, Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse.  Sammy was nominated by a patient’s family member who shared that Sammy took care of the

patient prior to a procedure and his calm demeanor and explanation throughout the prep provided comfort to the family. “This family was impressed with the updates Sammy provided when the procedure was slightly delayed for an emergency and after the procedure. His kindness and dedication to providing the best patient and family experience is the true definition of compassionate care for patients.

The Colleague of the Quarter for the La Porte Physician Network is Jennifer Whitenack, Office Manager for Pediatric Care. Jennifer was applauded for successfully tackling a series of new

experiences throughout the year.  “Her smile and caring attitude are appreciated by all,” according to the hospital. “Most recently, Jennifer reevaluated the process for providing flu shots to create immediate access for patients.”

Elizabeth VanHook

The La Porte Hospital Clinical Colleague of the Quarter is Elizabeth Vanhook, Antibiotic Stewardship Pharmacist. Elizabeth was nominated by multiple colleagues from a variety of departments. Hospital officials noted that she is described as well humored, a pleasure to be around, willing to help and committed to doing the right thing.

“It has been stated that she is invaluable to the department. Over the last year she has shared her expertise within the hospital’s information system. Her collaboration and passion to streamline processes is beneficial to the organization.”

The Starke Hospital Colleague of the Quarter, Erin McCormick, Emergency Department Nurse, (pictured on the front page, center left, flanked by her colleagues) is also the hospital’s Daisy Award recipient for extraordinary nursing. Erin was nominated by a patient who stated that the care Erin provided was exceptional. She was described as “an all-around amazing nurse who excelled at her job.” The patient said there were many tense moments with her care and Erin’s expertise and calmness helped make the patient feel comfortable and welcome.

La Porte and Starke Hospital CEO Ashley Dickinson expressed her gratitude for all of the fine colleagues throughout the organization. “Presenting our Colleagues of the Quarter and Daisy Award winners is one of the best parts of my job. It’s difficult to choose among so many good candidates but a joy to celebrate those who are recognized.”
