County police arrest man following charges of child molestation in Noble Township

A 48-year-old man was taken into custody last night on charges of child molestation, following a report to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department earlier this month.

David Powers has been charged with two counts of Child Molesting (Level 1 Felony) and two counts of Child Molesting (Level 4 Felony).  Powers remains housed in the La Porte County Jail and is being held on a $100,005.00 cash-only bond through La Porte Circuit Court.

Police report that on Feb. 7, 2020, Deputy Corey Chavez was summoned to a rural Noble Township residence regarding an unwanted guest.  After arriving, Deputy Chavez was informed that a sex offense had just occurred.  Initial information that was provided to him identified Powers as the accused.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division were contacted and immediately began to provide their assistance.  The case was assigned to Detective Gabe Struss.

Detective Struss prepared and presented his findings and information to La Porte County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Julianne Havens on Feb. 20, 2020; the La Porte County Circuit Court found probable cause in the matter and issued an arrest warrant for Powers. Members of the Fugitive Apprehension Street Team (FAST) then located and arrested Powers last night.

Detective James Lear, Detective Sergeant Adam Hannon, officers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, employees of Dunebrook Child Advocacy Center and employees of the Indiana Department of Child Services assisted in the investigation.

Arrests and criminal charges are mere accusations.  Every person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
