Scholarship named after Robert Komendera offered by Footlight Players

Any La Porte County high school senior, or any recent high school graduate living in LaPorte County, is eligible to apply for a $1,000 performing arts scholarship.

The “Robert W. Komendera Performing Arts Scholarship” is given by The Footlight Players of Michigan City. The deadline for all entries is March 9, 2020.

Komendera has been involved in community theater for over 60 years joining the Footlight Players in 1985 when he was cast as Fagin in “Oliver!”

“He has been a major part of 122 of their productions, directing 47 of them and winning 20 of Footlight Player’s annual theatrical awards,” said Footlight Players publicity chair William Wild.  “Bobby is currently serving his eighth elected term as Footlight’s president totaling more than 18 years. During the past 6 years he has had to deal with the devastating effects of diabetes. He has had a kidney/pancreas transplant, two fractured hips, both legs amputated below the knees, multiple angioplasties and most recently the failure of his transplanted kidney forcing him back to regular dialysis treatments. “Twenty-five years ago he married his friend of over 40 years, Bill Wild, the theatre group’s treasurer for over 23 years, who nominated him for this award.”

To register for the award, applicants may go on-line at to print out the application form. Applications may also be mailed to anyone interested by calling 219-879-5840 or by picking one up at Footlight Theatre, located at 1705 Franklin St., Michigan City, from Monday to Thursday, 6 to 8 p.m. If sending the application by mail, address the envelope to Footlight Players, Inc., P.O. Box 46 , Michigan City, Ind. 46361-0046.

A committee will review the applications and choose the winning entry. The award winner and 3 members of the winner’s  family will be invited free of charge to view the production of STEEL MAGNOLIAS on Sunday, May 3, 2020, when a check for $1,000.00 will be awarded.
