Police Chief Paul Brettin releases statement regarding Jefferson Avenue shooting

Chief of Police Paul J. Brettin of the La Porte Police Department, released the following statement at 1 p.m. today, March 29, 2020:

“On 03/28/2020 the La Porte Police Department afternoon shift was dispatched to the 1400 block of Jefferson Avenue in reference to a shooting at approx. 7pm.    This location is just west of the center downtown La Porte in a residential/light business area.

“Upon arrival officers encountered a very large group of subjects and a very chaotic scene.  Officers from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police arrived and assisted with preserving the scene and crowd control that was very tense and unstable for some time.

“There were two shooting victims from this incident and a person of interest has been detained and is being held at this time.   Detectives from La Porte Police, LaPorte County Drug Task Force and LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department worked together tirelessly on this case and continue to do so at this time.

“At this time no further information will be released due to the very active ongoing investigation.   Please understand that this is completely necessary to preserve the integrity of this case.

“There will be further releases in the coming days as the investigation continues.    We ask that the public not speculate on any aspects of this case and let the detectives work along with the La Porte County Prosecutors office to document the facts,” Brettin concluded.
