Officer Petrie and Edo — MCPD’s newest K9 duo

The Michigan City Police Department has announced that Officer Michael Petrie and K9 Edo have graduated from the Vohn Liche Kennels Dual Purpose Narcotic Detector Dog Handler Course.

They began their journey on February 17, 2020 and for the past six weeks have undergone extensive training and certification with the outstanding training staff at Vohn Liche Kennels in Denver, Ind.

Officer Petrie and Edo successfully completed training and certification in a number of topics, including narcotics detection, tracking, handler protection, off-leash obedience, criminal apprehension, and article, area and building searches.

K9 Edo is now certified in the detection of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine.

Officer Petrie is a 10-year veteran of the MCPD. Prior to joining the department, Petrie served four  years in the United States Army out of Fort Stewart, Ga. and served two tours of duty in Iraq.

K9 Edo is a one-year old Belgium Malinois from Poland.

“K9 Edo will not only work with Officer Petrie every shift, but K9 Edo will also live at home with Officer Petrie,” said police officials. “Officer Petrie and K9 Edo will work on Shift 3 (midnight shift), and their first shift together will be on April 1st. No joke!”

K9 Edo is the second K9 at MCPD. The department also has Officer Mike Oberle and his partner, K9 Axel. K9 Axel is also a dual purpose K9, specializing in the detection of narcotics. Officer Oberle and K9 Axel work Shift 2 (afternoon shift).

“Everyone here at the Michigan City Police Department is excited to meet K9 Edo and are extremely proud of Officer Petrie for this great accomplishment,” said MCPD Chief Dion Campbell. “The K9 Program is a tremendous asset here at MCPD and for police agencies around the world. K9s assist our officers in tracking down suspects and solving crimes, but they also protect our officers and the citizens from those with ill intent.”

Chief Campbell praised Vohn Liche Kennels for their professional relationship with the MCPD and for the hard work in preparing K9 Edo and Officer Petrie for a long and prosperous career together. “Congratulations to Officer Petrie and K9 Edo. This is the beginning of a lifetime friendship between the two of them!”
