Another driver stopped for going almost 100 mph, arrested for illegal possession of a firearm

For the second time in four days, a La Porte County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle for traveling almost 100 miles per hour and discovered the driver was a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Police reported that shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday, Deputy Jet Balenia was traveling westbound in the 6800 west block of U.S. 30. His dash-mounted radar unit measured the speed of an eastbound U.S. 30 passenger vehicle at 96 miles per hour. The deputy made a U-turn and caught up to the vehicle and made a traffic stop in the 2200 west block.

The driver was identified as Jerrell A. Coleman, 44, of Marietta, Ga. Further investigation revealed that a loaded firearm was located within the vehicle.

Coleman was taken into custody and transported to the La Porte County Jail, facing a charge of Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, a Level 4 Felony. He is being held on a $20,005.00 cash-only bond through La Porte Circuit Court.

“Since May 27th, deputies have removed five handguns from La Porte County roadways because of self-initiated traffic enforcement,” Captain Derek J. Allen said. “The removal of these firearms and subsequent arrests greatly increase the safety of the general public. Throughout the summer, deputies will be very active and continue to seek out firearms from unlawful subjects.”

Assisting in the case were Deputy Austin Howell, Deputy Michael Sweet and Deputy Scott Lanoue.

Arrests and criminal charges are mere accusations. Every person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
