Gunshots fired following disturbance at house party in Michigan City

Michigan City Police are asking for the public’s help in the investigation of an incident in which 20 to 30 gunshots were fired following a disturbance at a house party in the area of West Ninth and Wabash streets over the weekend.

Police said that Officers Dana Ford and Steven Kolarczyk were in the area of West Eighth Street and Wabash Street at around 2 a.m. when they heard 20 to 30 gunshots ring out a couple blocks south of their location. The officers then  traveled to the area of West Ninth and Wabash streets, where they saw a 17-year-old female on the ground with a suspected gunshot wound to her lower extremities. Ford immediately began providing first-aid to the victim until La Porte County EMS arrived. The unidentified juvenile was taken to Franciscan Hospital, where she was treated for a non-life-threatening injury.

Police said a 21-year-old male then arrived at the hospital’s emergency department with a suspicious injury to his hand. Officers tried to speak with him about his injury, but he refused to cooperate with the officers.

Officers located a crime scene where over 20 spent casings were recovered in the 900 block of Wabash Street, police said. Officers also located at least two vehicles that appeared to have sustained damage due to gunfire.

Witnesses were interviewed at the scene and police learned that the shooting appeared to stem from a party at a residence in the area.

“The specific details as to what led to this incident are still unclear and no suspects have been taken into custody as a result of this incident at this time,” police said. “The investigation is ongoing, and we would ask anyone with information or surveillance cameras (such as Ring doorbell cameras) in the area of West Ninth Street and Wabash Street to contact the lead detective on this case, Det.
