Humane Society seeks donations after pandemic forces cancellation of major fundraisers

This year marks the 100th year that the Michiana Humane Society, 722 Indiana Highway 212 in Michigan City, has served the area. Unfortunately, the continued effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in the cancellation of the society’s all three major fundraising events.

“Let me say first, for the moment we are fine. The animals are cared for, the staff are working,” said Johanna Humbert, executive director for the society. “But we do need help. The pandemic continues to take a toll. We have had to make the difficult decision to cancel all three of our large fundraising events this year. I have to be honest, the financial impact on the shelter could be profound if we are not able to replace the lost income.”

Therefore, she said, the society’s board of directors and event sponsors have put together a $100,000 match campaign to encourage others to give. “Every dollar you give to this campaign will be doubled for the animals,” she said.

The humane society does not receive tax dollars, Humbert said.

This is so sad and I’m sure every difficult for the facility! The Human Society is such an amazing place! I hope that the community will help with donations to help them through the year.
