1920

General John J. Pershing is taken ill before he was to address the Harvard Alumni Association. He had received an honorary degree from Harvard earlier in the day, and from Yale yesterday.

1970

Census figures revealed this morning show La Porte county’s population was 104,344, compared to 95,111 in 1960.

1995

Dr. Jonas Salk is dead at 80. He delivered the world from polio’s crippling rampage and later tried to devise a treatment for AIDS.

2010

The Salvation Army sees an increase in food requests, following last week’s powerful storms and outages.
