Family plans a parade to honor the Okrzesiks

Another La Porte couple has reached a marriage milestone and the family is planning a parade in their honor.
John and Shirley Okrzesik were married June 25, 1960 and, to mark the occasion of their 60th anniversary, the family has planned a surprise drive-by parade.
A daughter of the couple, Pam Miller, is a registered nurse and is organizing the event to stay in keeping with social distancing recommendations and to keep her parents safe. Family and friends of the Okrzesiks will meet at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 27 at the Kesling Middle School parking lot. The parade will start from the 18th street exit; the line of cars will then proceed east on 18th street to the couple’s home at 904 E. 18th St.
The Okrzesiks are members of La Porte’s First United Methodist Church. “John still refers to Shirley as ‘his bride’ and theirs is truly a match made in heaven,” Linda Torres, a niece, wrote WNLP. Mr. and Mrs. Okrzesik have three children: Pamela (Phil) Miller of La Porte; Regina (Gary) Kriadis of Valparaiso; and Gregory (Vickie) Okrzesik of Georgia.
